With the emerging concerns over Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a rare disease caused by mosquito bites, that has been found in Barry, Cass, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Berrien, St. Joseph, Genesee, and Lapeer Counties, resulting in 7 human cases and 3 fatalities. Local area health departments have posted and shared information encouraging families to take precautions. Mosquitoes are still active until after the first freeze of the season. Use bug spray with DEET, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, patch holes in your window and door screens, dump standing water in your yard, and use nets or fans over outdoor eating areas.
